The journal of Daniel O’Malley

(( Basic ooc rules apply, unless your toons know first-hand about what has happened in this journal or you were present for the situation this knowledge should be treated as ooc and is here for reading. ))
He had come to Zaradene like many others, on a boat with naught more than the clothes on his back and his bow and quiver filled with shoddy made arrows. He acquainted himself with the town and the things inside it he dubbed worth his time, the Fletcher, the tavern, before making his way out to explore. Daniel had never been one to stay in a town very long, often times he was only about long enough to refill his needed supplies and rarely have a drink in a tavern, and flirt with a waitress or two. As the sun begun its decent he made for the foothills outside of town to see if he couldn’t scratch up some loose coin.

He had barely cleared the town barricades and its guards before he caught scent of a small band of goblins, moving low using the colors of his cloak and armor to blend into the tall grass he made closer perching on a hillside until the small band came into sight. Setting shoddy arrow to shoddy string, Daniel drew and released felling the small creatures who returned fire fast as they could. He used the high ground to his advantage and after a small time the band of green skinned creatures had fallen. When he had cleared the hillside of the foul creatures he found a cave that was littered with them, he had managed to force his way in and liberate some of their surely stolen equipment. After he had gathered what was salvageable from the goblins he set back to the hillside by town to clean his wounds, it was only as he set to clambering back up the hill he felt the poison of the arrows take their true toll, he was done hunting for the day. With exhausted relief after a small chat with the innkeeper he plopped down exhausted and recovering on a comfortable bed for the evening.

****************************************************************
The next morning he felt reinvigorated and immediately set out exploring, the goblins had sent another patrolling band and Daniel made short work of them and continued down the road. He had merely made it around the hillside the goblin watched over before he saw a hulking figure in the distance.“That, is a … -big- goblin.” Eyeing his weighty loot bags Daniel weighed his options before striking down on the hobgoblin and rummaging his salvageable belongings. The suit of chainmail was salvageable but heavy so he removed it and left it on the corpse before peering about to see if there was any more activity.

Rounding a large thicket of bushes and trees he found what was a apparently a small hobgoblin camp, noting the patrolling pair of guards he readied his bow and fired into one before drawing his sword and shield already moving toward them at a headlong run. With the hulking brutes slain Daniel set to work examining what they had been guarding, with a ruffling of his hair he snatched all he could from the weapons rack and the small wooden chest collected more suits of chainmail and headed back toward town at a slow pace dragging his overfilled loot bags along the road with him.

He made town with the setting sun and approached the lady who waited outside by the barricade, they spoke briefly about the varying quality of the “recovered” loot as well as a bow and cloak Daniel had managed to acquire, offering the sacks full of mediocre goods to the lady save the bow and cloak, Daniel headed into town with a small pouch of gold to spend. His first stop, the Fletcher, Daniel was quick to replace his shoddy arrows with those of proper make, satisfied with his now full quiver he set about town looking for healing supplies. Once acquired he made his way back to the inn for drinks and a quick stop by the general shop for firewood and a tinderbox, he was planning on following the road farther tomorrow and would need to be able to camp if he planned on resting at all.

He left the inn with thoughts of scouting ahead for the coming day, he made his way down the road and passed the goblins easy enough, before being waylaid by highwaymen. They simply tried to bum rush him, no use of subtlety or finesse they simply charged shields and swords ready. Daniel was surprised only briefly before his sword and shield were drawn themselves and he met the bandits in combat, they were not novices at what they did but Daniel was growing in confidence in his abilities and was willing and able to rise to the task, standing over his former attackers Daniel set about relieving them of their still useful goods and headed back to town’s inn with a small bit of knowledge about what beset him the coming day. He paid for a full meal and a room for what he had hoped would be one of his last nights in the small town before heading upstairs to rest once more.

*************************************************************
It seemed the ranger could get no rest, even in his inn room, he was sure faeries were stealing his keys and he had to call for help to have the door opened, lucky for him the bartender had keen ears. After a brief explanation to the bartender and a few exchanged funny looks Daniel set off up the road out of Zaradene along the road through goblins and highwaymen until he stumbled upon a cave, the cave reeked of something horrible, but his curiosity had once again gotten the best of him and Daniel found himself exploring the dank caves. Around dimly lit corners and over what appeared to be nests, Daniel found himself confronted with at first a few small lizards armed with crossbows, undaunted the ranger approached using the various rock formations to sneak around, before he was spotted. He felt something inside him rip as he noticed a crossbow bolt sticking through his stomach.

He spent a moment on the ground wondering if that was going to be it, the snarling faces of the approaching lizards his warm blood surrounding him in a growing pool. He had all but prepared mentally for his fate before he felt warmth through his limbs a growing vibrant sensation that felt almost natural, before he knew it he was once again standing over the small lizards looking at his sword hand watching it almost amazed as it raised and cut through the small lizards again and again until he was alone in the cave. He peered about even more curious now than before and descended deeper into the caves, as he made around another corner deeper in the bowels of the twisting caves he managed to sneak upon a couple of much larger lizards, both were obviously well equipped, Daniel could see the gleam of armor even from the dim light. Not willing to be turned back from his curiosity he pressed the two after gulping down a liberated potion from the goblins that turned his skin to wood, and then he was upon them. After moments of dodging, the thudding of sword and flail on shield and the hissing of the lizards; then wooden form of Daniel found himself once more on the ground looking up at what he thought was again his end. Wooden eyes glared before he managed to spit blood at the one of the lizards in a show of defiance, the one was obviously some kind of healer and Daniel had been unable to fell either due to its skill. The two hissing forms closed before Daniel again felt the rush of warmth and he found himself rising to meet what he once thought was going to be his end. After a small battle both, the two armor clad lizards and Daniel ducked behind opposite corners.

Guess they weren't used ta seeing someone fall down and get up so many times...” He stopped for a moment before looking himself over and peering around, he was almost positive that he was being preserved but he could find nothing around other than his living self as a sign. “How did I?” He spent a few moments looking over his wooden frame for any sort of wounds before quickly taking his opportunity to have his way with the now unguarded weapons rack and chest, after a brief minute of fumbling about with them both Daniel glanced behind him at the sound of heavy footsteps and chainmail before taking what he had and making his escape.

Sunlight! He had found his way out of the cave and back to the road, now the question was to continue along the road or head back to Zaradene through highwaymen and goblins to rest, he was completely out of healing supplies so he decided to press his luck and continue along the path before him and it was then he reached a split, but as he approached the split almost deciding to just turn back he noticed human footprints and even wagon tracks to what looked like a nearby town, as he stumbled down the road, Daniel found his way into a place that was referred to as Good Bay. With utter relief audible in his voice, he traded with a boisterous dwarf his collected “liberated” goods for gold and found the inn before setting down and passing out from exhaustion for the night.

*************************************************************
The next day’s sun rose and Daniel awoke feeling refreshed, he had finally left Zaradene and had a new town to explore, more roads to poke about and a small bit of vengeance to garner. He left the room in a shambles as was his custom and headed downstairs to have his mug filled with fine foamy amber liquid which brought a smile to his face after a couple of sips. After finding a choice corner to lurk in while he finished his mug in silence though with an air of relaxation about as he did, the mug didn’t last long and he rose clipping it back to his belt before heading about town to explore.

He passed by the noisy dwarf and headed about, found a Fletcher called Bolo, his selection of arrows was astounding if a bit pricey. A temple, Markson’s general store, they even had docks, seemed Good Bay was not a small town, Daniel went about gathering his various needs for hunting camping and even the few odd potions, and before he knew it he was out and on the road once more. He headed down the road slightly back to the reeking cave before eyeing the hill it was carved into, he moved around the hill and found a decent spot to begin scaling the not to steep face, as he reached the summit he found another cave likewise reeking as the one below.
I’m gonna find those smelly bastards.” Was all he muttered before slinking inside. The upper cave was slightly better lit and filled with the small lizards and one of the larger armored ones tending what looked to be a cook pot. He rushed the small creatures dispatching them after a drawn out brawl and bum rushed the larger one. As he stood over the corpse he rummaged about the tables claiming a few potions and almost losing his lunch when he peered inside the pot. His appetite for vengeance sated he made his way back out of the cave and down the hillside.

He continued down the quiet road enjoying all the wildlife and fauna that sprang forth along the sides of the roads, Daniel couldn’t resist leaving the beaten path and scaled hillsides along the road stopping here and there to awe at a view or to laugh at fleeing wildlife, as he wandered he found a small abandoned home on a hillside and decided to set up camp there. He set to exploring the inside of the abandoned cottage offhandedly cleaning things up and shooing around various wildlife that had laid claim to the home. Raccoons, birds, rabbits and even a doe and her fawn had decided to make the ruined cottage their home. As he cleaned he heard the pitter patter of rain drops and peered outside at all the animals gathering about the doorway.

Fine, but only when it’s raining.” With that he shooed them about to various spots in the cottage creating make shift beds out of leaves and bolts of cloth, after tending to the now comfortable animals he set back to cleaning the messy corners of the old house and discovered something jutting out from under a bit of fallen staircase. After carefully removing the fallen bit of wood and other debris he found a rather nice, If recently uncared for bow. He unstrung and dusted it off doing his best to make sure it was in working order and nodded to himself, he also had found a few shiny baubles in his cleaning and he left them on a mantle with a promise to the raccoons that if the gems remained when he returned he would share his dinner. With that Daniel set back down the road and before long he found himself in a pleasant town filled with homes in the trees, for a moment he was utterly awe-struck, they even had bridges that linked the homes and common areas above. He found his way to a lift and was raised into the canopy and onto the bridge-walks in a few moments and after a short time, he found out he was in a town called Solace, and before he knew it he found himself inside a rather pleasant smelling well inn and set about collecting his list of food for himself and his new “friends”.

*************************************************************
He had found a sort of rhythm finally, the Kharolis pass, the entire valley from Zaradene to Solace he patrolled these lands as if they were his charge, often seen chasing goblins and highwaymen Daniel found himself following along a road from Zaradene along a set of tracks, odd prints, vaguely humanoid, his curiosity as usual got the better of him and he continued on to discover what seemed to be a clan of gnolls that had been causing various travelers trouble. They had a fortified patrol moving about the road, most likely expecting another clueless passerby, they were not expecting the ranger swords in hand to come charging out a nearby bush. The battle was gruesome Daniel had sustained a few arrow wounds but was now surrounded by fallen foes, he continued up the road and found what seemed like a camp site filled with more of the creatures.

The creatures for now were not expecting him, as long as he was careful they would be slow to notice his assault, so as he moved through the camp after dispatching the unprepared dog-men he set into their cave moving first to side passages, every time one gnoll was dispatched it was dragged into a shadowed corner and tucked away to prevent discovery. He discovered various barrels and containers that led him to believe that indeed the gnolls had been attacking travelers, gold pouches, potions and various other goods were “liberated”. As he moved through the cave he found a chamber that seemed to be where the leader of the gnolls enjoyed his horde, how fortunate.

Seems big bad must be out and about…” Daniel then set about to “liberating” the rest of the available goods before pausing having a bit of trouble with one of the chests. Suddenly, Daniels ears twitched at a noise, heavy clawed feet, and a lot of them drawing near. “Crap.” He muttered and ducked around the stone pillar behind the fancy chair and waited hearing the coming gnolls spread out sniffing the air. He noticed the sound of two of them speaking and waited for one to near before springing his attack, the two speaking were slightly larger and better armed, and despite their skill they too joined those on the ground dead. Daniel was quick to alleviate them of their still usable goods and make for his escape, though he couldn’t help feeling like the hunter had for the moment become the hunted. As he found his way back out of the cave he managed to dispatch a few more of the skilled gnoll hunters, before he found his way to sunlight once more. He silently wondered if it would be noticed that the roads were going to be a bit quieter that evening, as made his way back down the path he found himself holding something one of the gnoll hunters had dropped.

It looked to be a ruined stag helmet, but there was something inside that told him once this was something greater than what it appeared, he picked out the bits of flesh and hair from the obvious axe crack in it, he kicked over the gnolls cook pot and almost hurled, never look just kick, he managed to hold down his lunch and continue back to Zaradene. He popped into the local Fletcher to ask about the helm, sadly the Fletcher could tell him nothing for it seemed nothing more than a ruined helm to him. So Daniel set about town in thought swearing he remembered a similar helm on another. He took to the inn to rest off his excursion into the cave before he set out in search once more. The next day came and he rose with his customary mug of ale before setting out, then he saw her offering aid to those who asked stag helm worn proudly and all. Daniel quietly approached the missionary of the goddess Chislev, he held the helm out for her to notice before speaking up.

I think some gnolls stole this from one of yours.” He watched as she accepted offering him a smile then examining the helm, he waited curious of what she would say before speaking up again, “I cleaned and fixed it best I could, but I’m not skilled with armor.”

“Where did you get this?” She asked with a sad lilt to her soft voice as she looked the stag helm over.

A band of gnolls, one of their warriors had it before he fell.

Holding the helm in hand her gaze slowly rose to meet his own, “We've had a missing missionary ... I do not wish to acknowledge it but it must be hers ... I thank you most kindly stranger.”

With a slight bow at the waist he spoke quietly, “I’m sorry to bear such harsh news if it is the case, but I knew something needed to be said.”

She continued still soft spoken with the sad lilt to her voice, “We had a strong feeling she was lost to us but,” her voice trailed off before she shook her head and looked to him, “Please allow me to instill upon you the warmth of Chislev's embrace.”

He hesitated momentarily his eyes flicking back to the missionary before speaking once more, “Chislev? The mother of all nature?” After pausing briefly to think his curiosity once again bests him and he nods, ”It would be an honor.”

She spoke proudly, “Yes, Chislev, mother of all living things of the natural world, of beasts and men.” Accepting her offered hand watching the other grip a wooden medallion she spoke again with a smile, “I am Aria, and you are Daniel. Mother Chislev grants you her warmth and her love.” He had never felt so calm in his life before that point, it was as if he felt the world around him rather than only seeing it.

I am truly honored by her blessing.” He clenched a wooden fist feeling the warmth flowing through him, before glancing back to the missionary Aria.

“You have honored here whether you realize it or not Daniel O'Malley.” She smiled taking back up her spear and shield in hand, “If you would honor her once more? I must first warn you, it is a journey that is not without peril, take the helm and return it to her rightful place among her sisters, but it is within a place dreaded and feared.” Daniel nodded quietly listening as she continued. “However within such a place exists a "realm" of serenity and tranquility, I speak of Darkenwood.”

He was ready, he felt like he could wrestle a giant alone with a nod, “I would go, you have but to give me direction miss Aria.”

“You may find Darkenwood along the southern lands of Solace, just beyond the Crystalimire Lake, through the passes of Prayer's Eye Peak and beyond.” She paused briefly. “You will be hunted once you enter the Darkenwood by things natural and, unnatural, even beasts of the land will assail you, but it is nature’s way to struggle and test each other.”

He offered another nod before speaking confidently, “I have yet to travel the southern lands beyond Solace, very well then. I have something to attend to, may Chislev's warmth find you miss Aria.” The words seemed to roll from his mouth easily, as he finished speaking he accepted back the stag helm and turned striding south.

With a smile and a nod Aria spoke once more, “May she embrace and guide you warmly Daniel O'Malley.”
Daniel wasted no time heading into the setting sun first for Solace then much further south, he had gained the blessing of a goddess and did not intend to disappoint, he was driven he couldn’t stop his feet from running all the way through the Kharolis pass until he reached to town full with tree-homes.
